Is your child starting primary school

On this page, you will find useful information about starting primary school. As, for example, what the children have to take with them to school and whether the children will get food during school hours.

Child prosperity

The new Child Prosperity Act took effect on January 1, 2022. The goal of the Act is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties. Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a prosperity liaison in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. Guardians or children can start these prosperity services by requesting integrated services.

Vesturbæjarskóli school district

There are several school districts in Reykjavík and each child has priority in their district school. Nevertheless, all parents have the choice to apply to any school in the city for their children according to the rules on school districts, applications, and admission. Here is information on which streets belong to Vesturbæjarskóli's school district.

Primary school meals

School meals are free in Reykjavík City primary schools. Schools need to track allergy and intolerance information while minimizing food waste. Students must register for the school lunch program as before.

Students registered last year will be automatically enrolled. Others need to register. Change the registration at matur.vala.is.
