Education and teaching

Reykjavík City primary schools follow the national curriculum for primary schools, with reference to the Reykjavík City Education Policy. The main objective of the Policy is for all children to grow, develop and feel happy in a democratic society that is based on human rights and respect for the diversity of human life.
Through robust school and recreation activities, children and young people gain education and experience to realize their dreams and have a positive impact on their environment and society.
School curriculum
The school curriculum is a detailed implementation of the national primary school curriculum covering objectives, content, educational assessment, working methods and evaluation of school performance and quality.
Formative learning
Vesturbæjarskóli follows a formative learning approach where students regularly reflect on their learning with teachers to set goals and determine their direction. Formative learning fosters a learning culture that emphasizes a growth mindset, self-empowerment, and learning awareness.

Formative learning
Formative learning provides guidance to help children reach their goals. Goals must be well-defined so the child, teacher, and others involved in learning share the same understanding of achievement criteria. Emphasis is placed on a growth mindset where we believe students can develop their talents and abilities through diverse teaching methods. Learning is a process where making mistakes is natural and continuous improvement is always possible.
Student assessment
Formative assessment, as part of formative learning, primarily provides students with feedback to improve their performance. We use diverse assessment methods to systematically track every child's progress through formative assessment based on specific goals and performance standards. Educational assessment should guide and encourage the child and inform parents.
Mentor
Mentor is an information system for students, parents and school staff. Parents receive a Mentor password. The username is the parent's ID number. A password can be obtained on the login page. On Mentor, you can access educational assessments, class lists, phone numbers of classmates' parents and get information about student punctuality. Parents also use Mentor to request meeting times on consultation days. Parents are encouraged to download the Mentor app.

School attendance
The school emphasizes student punctuality. All children aged 6 to 16 must attend school, and parents/guardians are responsible for their enrollment, attendance, and participation.
If attendance issues arise, parents/guardians and the school must respond. To ensure effective responses, Reykjavík's primary schools follow unified guidelines and rules.
